Alien abduction cases did not gain widespread attention until the 1960s and beyond; there were few reported or few recorded cases before the 20th century, leading many to believe that the tales of abduction are either hoaxes or hallucinations brought on by science fictions films and novels. The Arrival

This 1996 abduction film starring Charlie Sheen is about a radio astronomer who finds evidence of extraterrestrial life and finds himself embroiled in a dangerous conspiracy. The film is another in a long line of alien abduction films that hypothesize that the United States government is covering up or even colluding with alien lifeforms in abduction and experimenting on their own people. The film was followed by a lesser sequel, “The Second Arrival” starring nobody in particular.

Signs

One of the highest grossing films of 2002, “Signs” was M. Night Shyamalan’s big followup smash hit after the lackluster commercial reaction to “Unbreakable.” Starring Mel Gibson in the perfect role as a former Episcopal priest who is fighting his own inner demons and questions of faith who finds his farm beset by mysterious crop circles. With his farm under attack by aliens and the outside world also reporting mysterious lights in 274 cities worldwide, Gibson and his family board up the house and prepare for a battle with the aliens. They find out water is deadly to aliens and use it to push them back.

The Astronauts Wife

Starring Johnny Depp and Charlize Theron, Depp is a NASA astronaut who with another astronaut experiences an explosion and loss of communication while on a routine space walk. His partner later dies of a massive stroke and Depp’s character finds his own personality changing. His wife tries to get to the bottom of what happened in space, and finds out that her husband and his partner where possessed by extraterrestrials in space. The film sets itself apart from other abduction films by highlighting how the abduction affects a wife’s relationship with her husband, and vice versa.
